Activities & Organizations

Adoration and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament

All are welcome to visit the Blessed Sacrament in Church for adoration on Tuesdays following the 8:00 AM Mass. The Blessed Sacrament will remain exposed for adoration until 7:00 PM when Benediction is celebrated.

Aid for Friends

This program provides homebound people with food, friendship and emergency aid and advocacy. The volunteers who assist in the food program prepare nutritious home-cooked dinners that include a diverse menu. Frozen meals are sent to the parish and distributed to the homebound who reheat them as needed. Anyone may participate in this program by preparing dinners or by delivering them to those in need.

Bowling League

St. Richard's Bowling League runs from September through May. The mixed league is open to those 18 years of age and older (must be out of high school!). The league bowls every Wednesday evening at 6:30 PM at St. Monica's Bowling Lanes. A small per team fee team applies. Teams consist of six players.

Charismatic Prayer Group

This group is committed to the deepening of one's prayer life through scripture reading and bearing witness to the power of the Holy Spirit with praise and thanksgiving. Meetings are held weekly on Tuesday evenings at 7:30 PM in the rectory basement and follow a format of hymn singing, teaching, witnessing, faith-sharing, and intercessory prayer. The group celebrates a social four times each year, and gathers for Mass three times a year (February, May, & November). Once a year the group gathers for a special Agape Meal celebration. Membership is open to all those seeking to deepen their relationship with the Lord through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Choir

The parish choir is a vibrant part of our parish liturgical celebrations. The choir leads the assembly in song every Sunday during the 11:30 AM Mass. The choir rehearses every Wednesday evening at 7:30 PM in Church. In addition, some members of the choir lead the assembly in song while serving as cantors during Sunday Masses, Holy Days, and special liturgical celebrations.

CYO Athletics

Various inter-parochial athletic programs are organized throughout the year through the CYO Sports organization. Coaches are accredited through the archdiocesan Office for Youth and Young Adults, which oversees games and meets within Regions. Costs for participating vary with the equipment and procedures involved for each sport (cheerleading, basketball, baseball, softball, and volleyball). Registrations are announced in the parish bulletin and through school communiques; children must meet certain eligibility requirements to participate. Volunteer coaches are always welcome.

Knights of Columbus

Founded on March 29, 1882 by Father Michael J. McGivney, assistant pastor of St. Mary's Church in New Haven, Connecticut, the Knights of Columbus serves as a fraternal benefit society founded on the principles of charity, unity and fraternity. The Knights render financial aid to members and their families and mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works. Catholic men of at least 18 years of age are encouraged to become part of this strong arm of the Catholic Church.

Pro-Life Group

This group takes an active role in praying and witnessing for an end to abortion and for respect for human life in all its stages. The parish Pro-Life Committee meets every other month with Pro-Life Committees and representatives from local area parishes. Meetings rotate on a yearly basis between participating South Philly parishes. The Pro-Life Committee organizes parishioners' participation in events for Mother's Day, Father's Day, prayer services, and the annual March for Life, held in Washington, DC, on the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision. The group also gathers at St. John the Evangelist (21 S. 13th St.) for the 7 AM Mass on the 3rd Saturday of the month, followed by recitation of the rosary outside Planned Parenthood.

Senior Citizens Group

Parishioners aged 50 years and older gather in the School Hall on Tuesdays from 12:00 to 3:00 pm (September through June). The Seniors group is 250+ members strong and concentrates on providing its members with opportunities for fellowship. Activities include: luncheons, casino trips, occasional bus tours and trips, vacation experiences and all around good fun. In addition, members attend funeral Masses for fellow members and spouses, and participate in an annual Memorial Mass in November for deceased members.

Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary

St. Richard's Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary was founded in 1925 by Fr. Hanagan, founding pastor of St. Richard. The group is affiliated with the First Sodality in Vatican City. Sodality has been responsible for many events and happenings at the parish throughout its long history. The group is open to women of all ages. Members gather once a month for socials and every Monday morning in Church for the 8 AM Mass followed by recitation of Novenas. The group also gathers for an annual retreat in February.

St. Vincent de Paul Society

Founded in 1833 by Blessed Frederic Ozanam, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul is an organization of Catholic laypersons dedicated to offering personal service to those who are suffering or in need. The international society is organized in local conferences, which seek to work together with other parish members and organizations to provide services such as food cupboards, clothing drives and thrift stores. Members meet in the rectory on the 2nd Sunday of the month at 1 PM.
